To be used as a supplement to a balanced diet when trying to strength liver function and eliminate toxins from the body.

From the Western perspective liver cells and to a lesser extent kidney cells have significant amounts of smooth endoplasmic reticulum which is dedicated to metabolizing blood borne drugs or toxins, including alcohol. Liver and kidney enlargement is common for individuals who consume large amounts of alcohol or who must take pharmaceutical medications over a prolonged period. It should be noted that during deep sleep growth hormone released from the brain stimulates the liver to secrete somatomedins. Somatomedins are recognized as hormones that bring about tissue growth, repair and maintenance throughout the body. It is why growing children require more sleep than fully mature adults. The liver's secretion of somatomedins during sleep for growth and repair of tissues is inhibited when the liver must instead metabolize drugs, alcohol and other blood borne toxins. Overuse of alcohol leads to a hangover and general fatigue the following day for the reasons stated above.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, toxins may enter the body due to External Wind, Damp Heat, directly as ingested chemicals and from air pollution. As a result of over accumulation of toxins, pathological imbalances can occur with the Liver, Lungs and Intestine. The Liver loses its dispersing and discharging action. The Intestine loses its ability to excrete unwanted fluid and food residues from the body. The lung loses its clearing action.

TCM Indications: Over accumulation of toxins in the Liver, Lung and Intestine, marked by pale complexion, lassitude of the limbs, and dyspepsia.

Tongue: has whitish and greasy fur.

Pulse: Bowstring pulse.
