To be used as a supplement to a balanced diet when treating pruritus or itchy skin.

From the Western scientific perspective generalized pruritus or itching is most severe when due to bites, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, malaria and other specific disease states. Dry skin among elderly people, weather changes, some parasitic infections and some cases of diabetes may also cause severe generalized itching. The recommendation from both Eastern and Western perspectives for generalized itching is to (if feasible) stop taking drugs, avoid irritating clothing (eg, woolens), and minimized bathing or exposure to water. Topical corticosteroids seldom alleviate generalized itching.

From the view of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the itching syndrome occurs when Dampness and Heat accumulate in the skin, or it occurs when Blood deficiency and Liver excess create Wind and Dryness, and the skin loses its nutritional support. In the latter case there is a downward flow of Heat and Dampness in the Liver and Gallbladder. In some cases people who have been ill for prolonged periods of time develop generalized pruritis due to deficiency of the Spleen, Liver and Kidney. Another etiology can be disharmony of the Chong and Ren Channels with accumulation of Damp Heat.

TCM Indication: Itching and dryness syndrome marked by scratching, scratch marks on the skin, dried blood crust in scratched areas, lichenification, pigmentation, hypopigmentation, skin wrinkling, and skin thickening.

This formula is directed at generalized itching and succeeds when other recommendations listed above are also considered. Acute care clinical TCM research in China shows that this formula is effective at relieving inflammation, relieving generalized itching, tranquilizing the mind, promoting blood circulation, relieving allergic causes of itching, and resolving the TCM root causes of itching: Dampness, Heat, and Wind Dryness.
