To be used as a supplement to a balanced diet in the presence of menorrhagia: excessive duration and/or amount of menstruation.
The Western scientific perspective on menorrhagia is that it is most often due to hormonal imbalances during the early and middle reproductive years and due to functional reasons (only 25% of all cases including neoplasias) during older reproductive period. In general, practitioners look at hormonal abnormalities along the hypothalamic - pituitary - ovarian axis as this is the negative and positive feedback loops that must be addressed. It is helpful to recall that low estrogen levels represent negative feedback whereas high estrogen levels represent positive feedback. Normally estrogen levels rising above progesterone levels occur only at the time of ovulation or at the time childbirth. Hormonal imbalances along these lines are generally implicated in this disorder.
From the Traditional Chinese Medicine view, menorrhagia may have three etiologies. First, there is Qi deficiency and weakness of the body leading to reduced circulation of the Blood through the whole body. The Qi deficiency and weak body can not regulate vaginal bleeding. This case also includes exhaustion of Qi associated with severe hemorrhage. Second, Yin deficiency induces internal Heat, or the woman contracts Heat from outside, or a disorder of emotional reactions produces Fire which invades the head into the Xue (Blood) phase. Vaginal bleeding results from injury to the Collateral channels which allow an abnormal flow of Blood due to excessive heat. Third, Blood stasis and accumulation in the Chong and Ren Channels causes stagnation of Blood in the uterus leading to vaginal bleeding.
TCM Indications: Menorrhagia and stasis due to deficiency and impairment of the Chong and Ren channels marking by uncontrolled vaginal bleeding.
