To be used as a supplement to a balanced diet in the presence of sciatica.

From the Western scientific perspective the sciatic nerve serves the posterior and lateral hip regions, the posterior thigh region, the entire leg , ankle and foot for muscle activity and skin sensation. This nerve also serves the lower extremity joints and carries impulses for reflexes. It has been noted by physical therapists that most of the signs and symptoms associated with sciatica can be traced to "outlet syndrome." Outlet syndrome occurs when the nerve emerges from the pelvic cavity between muscles which impinge on the nerve and cause reduced circulation. The sciatic nerve with its own connective tissues and vasculature is the size of an individual's forefinger when it emerges from the greater sciatic foramen and passes between two lateral rotator muscles in the deep gluteal region, deep to the gluteal muscles. It is at this point that tight muscles and lack of circulation could interfere with clear neural transmission of impulses.

Sciatic pain in Traditional Chinese Medicine belongs to Bi (blockage) Syndromes. This is caused by Wind, Cold and Damp Qi attacking the body and entering the Channels. This brings about an Essence change to Turbid-Yin. Then poor Qi and Blood circulation leads to phlegm from blood. Damp stasis phlegm obstructs Ying and Wei.

TCM Indications: Stagnation of Wind, Cold-dampness in the Channels and collaterals marked by numbness, tingling (unrelenting) or pain radiating to the thigh and leg muscles and bone in a variable manner without fixed locations.

This formula targets the lower back as well as the entire course of the sciatic nerve and its branches. Acute care clinical TCM research shows that this formula relieves sciatic pain and muscle spasms, tranquilizes the mind, relieves inflammation and promotes blood circulation.
